I Ching Yes or No Questions: Do They Really Work?
Many people ask whether the I Ching can answer yes or no questions.
The honest answer is: sometimes, but that is not where it is strongest.
Why yes or no is limiting
The I Ching is designed to show:
- pattern
- tension
- change
- consequence
- timing
That is richer than a flat yes or no.
A better approach
Instead of asking:
- Should I do this, yes or no?
Try:
- What is the nature of this situation?
- What should I understand before I act?
- What happens if I continue in this direction?
These questions produce much more useful readings.
Can you still extract a yes or no?
Some readers do reduce a reading to a yes/no tendency after interpreting the whole structure.
That can be done, but it should come after the reading, not in place of it.
